Description Good storytellers capture attention. They help listeners visualize characters, connect to dialogue, and become sensitive to sensory details that bring the story to life. Students become deeply engaged in listening and perceiving. In addition, storytelling is a powerful part of creating and enhancing classroom community and relationships. In this hands-on workshop, develop your ability to tell stories to students more effectively as you tell and involve students in the telling by playing with expressiveness of voice, tone, and body movement. Your increased skills will develop students' story comprehension and recall. As evidenced in classroom after classroom, these are powerful strategies for developing literacy skills in students, from reading, to writing, to speaking, and listening. Reading specialists and special education teachers will also benefit from this unique workshop led by Stuart Stotts, Wisconsin storyteller, author, and musician.
We will work together as a group in the morning to explore storytelling skills and learn simple folktales. In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to tell stories and use exercises in the art form with elementary aged students. We will finish the day with a reflection on the practice and application of storytelling in classrooms.
